It’s the “why”, not the “how” that matters.
If I put a gun on your loved one’s head and said to you that unless you do a deal within 48 I will pull the trigger. Guess what would would happen? Every one would do a deal. It’s not “how” a thing is done but “why” a thing is done that matters.
Ask yourself what is your motivation? Why are you in rentals? If you create a strong enough why, a how will happen.
If the only reason that you come up is “money”, then that is not a good enough “why!”
Let me give you a really good example. In the past 20 years I have lost close to $200000 in gambling. Last year alone I dropped $20000 on Texas Hold Em’. The truth is that not only am I not a good player, but I am a really lousy player. I was the one player on the table that made the other ten look great. Even after being a dumb player for so long why did I not quit. It was not that I did not know “how”, the real answer was “why”. Money in and off itself was not a strong enough motivating factor to make me leave the game. In this case the motivation of not losing money.
Let me give you another example. 20 years ago I lived on 34th street. One day I was in the elevator I saw a really really really really pretty girl. I thought she was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen. We shared a few words and I found out that her name was Danielle and it was her birthday was the same day. I saw her get off on the third floor. I REALLY wanted to know this girl. I went to the doorman, slipped a $20 bill in his palm and got her apartment number.
I went to Crate and Barrel and bought one of those breakfast trays with legs. Got an amazing cake, flowers, a candle, a glass, a bottle of wine and a card. I decorated it beautifully and wrote a really “cool” note and left it at her door. When she came home late that night after celebrating with her friends she was surprised to find it at her door. To make a long story short, she became my girl friend and we were together for almost a year. It was not the “how” that mattered, it was the “why!” I really wanted to be with her.
Discover your “WHY”. If you don’t have one, then find one. We all know that 33% of the agents in rentals this year won’t be in the business next year. It’s not that they lack potential, it’s because of a lack of a strong enough “why”
Personally my “why” is that I “love” selling. I love making deals happen. I enjoy the gratification of a closed deal. I enjoy winning.
Last year when I ran an office with over 70 agents at one time, my “why” was money and I totally blew it. Failed at it and had to down size and move to a smaller office. Money alone as a why was not enough.
Now I am one of the happiest rental agents working in New York. I totally ENJOY it.
You need to discover your “why” and begin enjoying this fun and lucrative business of rentals.
