Personal Development
admin

Hold yourself responsible for a higher standard than anybody else expects of you.” - Henry Ward Beecher

True success is dependent upon continual education and growth both as an agent and as a person. We only have 24 hours in a day and we only have a certain number of days on earth – are we really making the best use of our time? Personal development makes you question how you spend your time, where you put your energy and how you can improve your life.

Think about each hour in terms of your career. Some folks earn minimum wage for each hour, others earn $1,000 per hour! How much do you charge for each hour of work? How can you increase your level of prosperity?

In Chapter 2, I mentioned Charles “Tremendous” Jones who told me that if I spent one hour each day reading (or otherwise educating myself) on a single subject I would become an expert on that subject in just five years. I absolutely believe this to be true, not just for me but for anyone!  Separate yourself from the pack of average agents by consistently dedicating yourself to that one hour of education and self-improvement. This alone will greatly enhance your success!

In addition to reading books there are many places to seek out information that contributes to your personal development:

  1. CD’s
  2. Listen to CD’s on business, sales, real estate, marketing or other related subjects. CD’s are convenient because they allow you to multi-task – listen while you’re riding the subway, taking a walk, or engaged in some mindless chore at home!

  3. DVD’s
  4. DVD’s give you the kind of information you can’t get from books or CD’s. They allow you to observe actual sales presentations to get a sense not only of words spoken, but of tone, body language (of agent and client), pacing, and style. Anything of this sort is extremely valuable for a new agent. Seek out role-playing DVD’s that deal with client calls and closing skills especially.

  5. Blogs & Podcasts
  6. Sales blogs and podcasts are a great resource of the most current ideas. It’s important to expose yourself to many different sources of information. You never know where you will pick up that single idea that will transform your business!

  7. Seminars & Trade Shows
  8. Attend a seminar on anything from sales to time management. I’ve discovered several life-changing concepts at seminars! Also consider trade shows or expos for real estate and sales.

  9. Associations
  10. The New York Real Estate Board, Manhattan Association of Realtors, and National Association of Realtors are just a few of the associations available to you. Each of these offers additional tools to help you become a champion agent.

  11. Mentor
  12. Working with a good mentor is crucial! Find a mentor who has accomplished what you want to accomplish; model her behavior, listen to her advice and you will find yourself on the smoothest and quickest trajectory to success!

  13. Learn from those around you.

Your office manager can be great asset as you strive to master your skills as an agent. Constantly observe those around you – top agents at your office, and even the competition. Analyze rental ads on Craigslist – study the ones that are most compelling!
